isabelle allendeChilean-American author Isabel Allende is best known for her sweeping epics spanning decades while also diving deep into the lives of families, individuals and even countries. Join instructor and author Pam Novotny as she guides you through an “advanced book group,” teasing out the common themes, lyrical styles, and compelling characters and concerns at the heart of Allende’s classic works. Read Of Love and Shadows before the first class and arrive ready to discuss this highly praised novel, considered both dark and disturbing, warm and human. Two weeks later, the discussion turns to Daughter of Fortune, a spellbinding novel that Allende spent seven years researching. In both of these works, Allende examines the past, confronts mysteries of parentage, murder and the soul, and searches for love and its passion.

ripperBetween classes, take a break from reading to see Allende in person at DU, compliments of Tattered Cover Book Store. Allende discusses her body of work, including her latest book, Ripper, which you’ll receive as part of the course. Come away with a deeper appreciation for this powerful, beloved author who never ceases to entertain readers around the world with her novels of history, mystery and love.

Pamela Patrick Novotny has taught at the CU School of Journalism, Colorado Authors’ League, Colorado Independent Publishers, American Society of Journalists and Authors; has written more than 10 non-fiction traditionally published books and has two mysteries with her agent.
