There’s probably some proverb that says if you do something good at the beginning of the year you will be rewarded tenfold. Well, here’s your opportunity. Some friends of CAL Member Peg Brantley in the Denver area had a popular, engaged, football-playing son who was deeply, secretly troubled. Like so many other families they didn’t recognize any of the signs. When Shaka took his own life he left a lot of unanswered questions. Les and Marianne determined to do whatever they could to make sure that devastating, gut-wrenching loss never happened to another family. Les left his job and he and Marianne formed the Shaka Franklin Foundation. Not long afterward, Shaka’s older brother also committed suicide. The staggering loss that might have pushed anyone else to utter despair only strengthened the resolve and commitment of these two amazing people. Les and Marianne Franklin have made what might have crushed any other parents into a focus of hope.
The annual fundraiser for the Shaka Franklin foundation is April 18th. One part of that fundraiser is the silent auction, and last year some gift baskets of books introduced by Peg that went over very well. For this year’s event, we’d love for CAL to have a presence with some potential visibility for the incredibly talented authors in our Colorado. If you’d like to contribute to a CAL basket for the fundraiser, please mail or deliver your book(s) to:
4865 S Dillon Way
Aurora CO 80015
If you are interested in attending the event, Peg is willing to organize a table for the luncheon for our group if there is enough interest. The tickets are $100. The speakers this year will spotlight concussions related to sports injuries that have been in the news. Please let Peg know directly at firstname.lastname@example.org if you’d like to attend.
