Joyce Meskis, owner of Denver’s Tattered Cover independent bookstore group, will be honored by the Colorado Authors’ League with its Author Advocate Award at CAL’s annual awards banquet May 8 at the Skyline Ballroom, Courtyard by Marriott in Cherry Creek. The Author Advocate Award was established this year by CAL to recognize individuals whose unique support of—and involvement in—the world of writing and publishing contributes to the vitality and longevity of authorship and the printed word. “Joyce Meskis was the unanimous choice for our inaugural honoree because of her lifelong commitment to both readers and writers,” says Vickie Bane, president of CAL.
Through its LoDo, East Colfax and Highlands Ranch locations, Tattered Cover hosts more than 500 author events annually, including many Colorado and regional authors. In addition, Tattered Cover now offers a print-on-demand service to help writers break into book publishing. A native of Lansing, Illinois, Meskis bought the then-three-year-old Tattered Cover bookstore in 1974. From less than a thousand square feet then, 40 years later she has three sprawling stores that stock more than a million books between them.
Meskis also directs the University of Denver Publishing Institute, which offers a high intensity postgraduate certification program. She has served as president of the American Booksellers Association, and has received free speech awards for her successful refusal in 2000 to honor a subpoena seeking bookstore records in a criminal investigation.
CAL, the oldest professional writers’ organization in the state, was established in 1931 “to foster the art and craft of authorship.” Today, its membership includes nearly 250 authors of fiction and non-fiction, magazine journalists, children’s book writers, playwrights, screenwriters and poets. CAL sponsors a variety of professional enrichment programs, writing grants for members, an annual scholarship for an aspiring writer and other programs to promote the work of professional writers in Colorado.
