The 2015 Colorado Authors’ League Writing Contest, with new E-book categories and $100 prizes for all winners, will accept submissions beginning Monday, December 1. Any entries received before then will be returned. Complete entry details will be announced on that date. The deadline for entries will be midnight-postmark January 31, 2015. To be eligible, writers must be CAL members and have published their work either traditionally or independently in 2014. Entry forms will be available at the CAL web site. Winners in all categories will be announced at the annual Awards Banquet on Friday, May 8, 2015. The banquet will return to the Skyline Room of the Courtyard by Marriott in Denver Cherry Creek, where last year more than 140 authors, guests and publishing luminaries attended the event.
Winning a CAL writing prize can be a transformative moment for an author, a validation of their hard work, or a special reward.
“Oh man, oh man, oh man. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was hoping to win after the nomination,” recalls Twist Phelan, last year’s winner in Short Fiction, Adult/Children. “But it was still a huge shock. To have your work recognized by fellow writers is a tremendous privilege. My friend and fellow writer Laura Lippman once advised me when it came to writing awards, to regret the losses for five minutes and celebrate the wins for ten. The celebration for the CAL award might have gone on for eleven.”
