In celebration of Women’s History Month, Thordis Niela Simonsen will show photographs, read stories from Dancing Girl that reflect on the meaning of womanhood, and introduce previously unpublished essays. Since 1981, Thordis has sojourned annually in the Greek village, Elika. Unlike the village women, Thordis is not a wife or mother. Unlike the village women, she is not orthodox. And unlike the village women, she does men’s work—restoring a once-abandoned house single-handedly. In light of their differences, why do the villagers refer to Thordis as an Elikiotissa, a woman of Elika?
