15 Categories including the New Category of Single Poems!
Submissions opened on December 1st for the 2016 Colorado Authors’ League Writing Contest in 15 categories, including Single Poems and Children’s / Young Adult Nonfiction. The deadline for entry is January 31, 2016. To be eligible, writers must be CAL members and have published their work either traditionally or independently in 2015. In addition to awards of $100 and the prized engraved-glass CAL trophy for all winners, finalists in the book categories will be invited to participate in a CAL signing/reading event at the Tattered Cover, 2526 E. Colfax Avenue, in April. This is an exclusive agreement between CAL and Tattered Cover, and details will be forthcoming.
Winners in each category will be announced at the annual Awards Banquet on Friday, May 6, 2016. The banquet will return to the Skyline Room of the Courtyard-Marriott in Denver Cherry Creek, where last year more than 130 authors, guests and publishing luminaries attended the event.
CAL will again present its Lifetime Achievement Award at the banquet. Last year’s honoree was longtime CAL member and best-selling national author Clive Cussler. The nomination period will be announced soon.
The cost for each CAL entry is $50.
Non-CAL published authors can qualify for the contest by first registering for CAL membership at www/coloradoauthors.org and paying the membership fee (also $50) using PayPal. Membership applications must be reviewed and confirmed by the CAL board to be eligible for the contest, but with early registration can be done in time to meet the January 31, 2016 contest deadline. Winning an annual CAL writing prize can be a transformative moment for an author, a validation of their hard work, or a special reward.
In addition to the Single Poem category, Poetry-Collection will return as a separate category. Fiction and non-fiction E-books will also return to the contest. The 11 other categories are: Mainstream Fiction, Genre Fiction, Young Adult, Children’s, Short Fiction, General Nonfiction, Creative Nonfiction, Children’s/Young Adult Nonfiction, Feature Articles, Essays and Blogs. Other benefits of entering the contest include promotion for finalists in Tattered Cover store marketing and ads, promotion on the CAL web site, and the complimentary CAL gold (winner) and silver (finalist) book stickers.
