Chuck Greaves, Maggie Pike, M.J. Evans and Stan Moore have been selected by the CAL Board as the four CAL authors to be featured at the first CAL Book Beat at The Denver Press Club on Friday March 11th. Their books are:
Greaves: Tom & Lucky and George & Cokey Flo – A Wall Street Journal “Best Books of 2015” selection, this tells the story of one of the more colorful and controversial criminal trials in American history, Thomas E. Dewey’s 1936 vice prosecution of New York mob boss Lucky Luciano. “Boisterous historical fiction . . . Mr. Greaves is one helluva good storyteller,” the Journal review praised.
Evans: In the Heart of a Mustang – A boy named Hunter and a mustang mare saved from starvation by the Bureau of Land Management meet on an Arizona ranch for troubled teens, and the bond that forms between them becomes one that saves both of their lives. This is a story that brings attention to the plight of wild mustangs in the West.
Pike: Just Listen For The Thud – “Thud” provides everyday caregivers uplifting narratives about family members who learned to embrace humor as they cared for loved ones afflicted with life-threatening illnesses; winner of the San Diego State University Conference Choice Award in 2005.
Moore: Mister Moffat’s Road – The Denver Northwestern and Pacific Railway was formed by David Moffat and friends in 1903. Stan’s great-grandparents supplied meat and produce to one of the construction camps, and he uses their diaries and letters, along with historical research, to create a dramatized version of the epic effort that overcame a plot to thwart the project and culminated with the east portal of Moffat Tunnel at Rollins Pass, above Winter Park.
The March 11th program will begin at 6:30 p.m. The Press Club will be serving a buffet dinner for $10 per person starting at 5 p.m. Cash bar will be open, and the featured books will available for sale, throughout the evening. No sign up is required for this event – just show up and pay at the door!
