Best-selling author Margaret Coel has been chosen to receive the Colorado Authors’ League Lifetime Achievement Award for 2016. And Arapahoe Library District research librarian Pamela Hallaren is this year’s CAL Author Advocate Award honoree. The awards will be presented at the annual CAL Awards Banquet on Friday, May 6th, at the Courtyard by Marriott.
Coel was chosen by a committee of CAL past presidents from a group of nominees submitted by CAL members. The Author Advocate Award is presented by the CAL Board of Directors when they identify a worthy recipient. President of CAL in 1990-91, Coel is author of the New York Times best-selling Wind River mystery series, set among the Arapaho on Wyoming’s Wind River Reservation and featuring Jesuit priest John O’Malley and Arapaho attorney Vickie Holden.
Five of her novels have won the Colorado Book Award, and The Spirit Woman won the Willa Cather Award for Best Novel of the West. She also is the author of five non-fiction books, including the award-winning biography of Chief Left Hand, which the Colorado Historical Society included on its list of the best 100 books on Colorado history.
Hallaren is one of the research librarians in the Arapahoe Library District’s Book A Librarian program. She has served CAL by participating on its research panel program at Erie Community Center in 2014 and as a presenter at the CAL Craft Fair at Arapahoe Community College in 2015. She has assisted several CAL authors with individual research – often beyond the limits of the Book A Librarian program – and looks forward to working with more CAL authors in the future.
In the Book A Librarian program, individuals can request a librarian to assist with virtually any type of research, from class assignments to job searches to writing projects. During a 30-minute appointment, the librarian works solely on that individual’s research need. Research librarians are information experts who know how to identify the right resources to answer most questions. Appointments are provided free of charge and are available in English, Spanish, and Russian.
