John Turley’s Unlikely Career from Self-Publishing

Posted on July 30, 2016 | in Member News | by

the Simple TruthJohn Turley self-published THE SIMPLE TRUTH: BP’s Macondo Blowout (by J.A. Turley) in September 2012, because as many as a hundred agents turned him down, a number fearing “unmitigated liability”. Je worked with Amazon to publish paperback and Kindle versions, and commendable sales of the book led to a new career . . . as a professional speaker on the same topic—the cause of the devastating 2010 blowout in the Gulf of Mexico. As invited guest, panelist, and keynote speaker, Turley made almost fifty presentations across the U.S. and international to energy companies, technical conferences, universities, environmentalists, and civic groups. Then his own professional group, the Society of Petroleum Engineers, named him to be a Distinguished Lecturer, sponsoring him to make my presentation around the world and resulting in another thirty presentations across the U.S., and in Canada, the U.A.E., Bahrain, England, Scotland, Spain, Australia, and New Zealand, with his final presentation in Brisbane, Australia, on May 19th. Turley’s cumulative audiences total almost 5000, and near 10,000 readers have a copy of his book. Turley comments, “Not bad for a self-published newbie willing to spend six years on a project driven by passion alone. So now it’s back to dusting off other completed manuscripts—mysteries—that deserve a bit of TLC and editing. And it’s good to be home.”
