Book Launch in Colorado Springs

Posted on April 30, 2017 | in Member News | by

CAL member Joyce B. Lohse will be featured guest speaker for the book launch of Pikes Peak Library District’s latest history symposium compilation, Bigwigs and Benefactors in the Pikes Peak Region, on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Penrose Library. Joyce will discuss research for her chapter, “The Penrose Legacy: Ventures, Vogue, and Vagary,” and for her recent biography, Spencer Penrose: Builder and Benefactor. Spencer Penrose, and his business partner, Charles Tutt, built a fortune in the mining industry. Penrose used his wealth, business sense, and clever publicity tactics to promote and develop the Pikes Peak Region. In addition to the Broadmoor Hotel, he built roads up Pikes Peak and Cheyenne Mountain, the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and the Manitou Incline, as well as hospitals, schools, libraries, and the El Pomar Foundation, which has donated more than a half a billion dollars to Colorado grants and programs.
