Awards Dinner Sold Out! The 2016 CAL Awards Dinner and CAL’s 85th Birthday Party Friday night has sold out. We cannot accept any more registrations. Thank you for your interest. We hope you attend next year.
Happy Birthday! That’s the theme of the 2016 Colorado Authors’ League awards banquet. The state’s oldest professional writers’ organization, CAL was founded in 1931. That makes 2016 its 85th year; hence the birthday party theme. In addition to special activities commemorating CAL’s 85th birthday, winners of the League’s prestigious annual writing awards will be announced. And two special awards – the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Author Advocate Award – will be presented.
Guest speakers are (L to R) mountaineer Jim Davidson and journalist/author Kevin Vaughan, who collaborated on the New York Times best-seller The Ledge. On June 21, 1992 Jim Davidson and his close friend, Mike Price, fell 80 feet into a crevasse on their return from reaching the summit of Mount Rainier. His friend killed in the fall, Davidson had to devise a way to climb out of the freezing dark chasm before dark, lest he die too, from exposure. He knew he couldn’t hope for help because no one knew he was down there.
His escape is a harrowing, gripping story told expertly by journalist/author Kevin Vaughan in The Ledge, which recently reached the New York Times Best-Seller list and is now in its sixth printing in paperback edition. Davidson, who narrowly escaped the earthquake that killed 23 on Mount Everest two years ago, will share his survival stories, and Vaughan will relate what went into writing Davidson’s amazing tale of ingenuity and ultimate survival as the guest speakers at the 2016 CAL Award banquet Friday, May 6, at the Courtyard by Marriott Skyline Ballroom. The festivities are May 6th at The Courtyard by Marriott on Colorado Boulevard in Glendale, beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person.
