Robert Shop Honored

CAL member Robert Shoop of Colorado Springs recently was named a DISTINGUISHED FACULTY OF THE YEAR by Colorado Technical University. Robert has been in adult education since 1989; he has taught Criminal Justice classes at CTU since 2011.

Welcome New CAL Member Joe Murphy

Joseph Murphy has been published in a wide range of literary journals, including The Ann Arbor Review, Northwind and The Sugar House Review. He recently had collection of poems published, Crafting Wings (Scars Publications, 2017); his second collection, Having Lived, is forthcoming from Kelsay Books (2018). Murphy is senior poetry editor for an online literary publication, Halfway Down the Stairs, established 2006. More information on him and samples of his poetry can be found online at the Colorado Poets Center.

The 2018 Colorado Book Awards Are Open for Submissions

Submissions for the 2018 Colorado Book Awards are now open and entry forms can be found at coloradohumanities.submittable.com/submit. The deadline is to submit the entry form is Monday, January 8, 2018, and books must also be postmarked by this date. Submissions are welcomed for books published in 2017. The Colorado Book Awards is an annual program that celebrates the accomplishments of Colorado’s outstanding authors, editors, illustrators and photographers. Awards are presented in at least ten categories including anthology/collection, biography, children’s, creative nonfiction, fiction, history, nonfiction, pictorial, poetry and young adult.

Death and Dying in the Victorian Era, with Randi Samuelson-Brown

Randi Samuelson-Brown will be one of the speakers at Atlas Obscura’s “Death and Dying in the Victorian Era” lecture, October 14 at 4:00 at Lighthouse Writers. The discussion will be around mourning jewelry, post-mortem photography and the mourning customers of the soiled doves. Tickets are $5 for early bird and $7 regular admission. Silver Medal for Margi Evans

Margi Evans is excited to receive the Silver Medal for her coming of age novel, In the Heart of a Mustang, from the Readers’ Favorite Awards. The award ceremony is held annually in Miami, FL during the month of November. Since Margi has been invited to bring her book to the Equus Film Festival the same weekend, Readers’ Favorite kindly sent her the beautiful medal.
